Subpersonalities – A Collection of Articles by Roberto Assagioli, 2022, 110 pages. A free e-book from Kentaur Publishing.
This e-book contains ten articles about subpersonalities by the Italian Dr. Roberto Assagioli, the founder of Psychosynthesis. Nine of them have never been published before in the English language. There is also a collection of quotes from his books and articles, so in this work, you will find many of Assagioli’s deep insights into the topic of subpersonalities.
Subpersonalities are one of the chief points of Psychosynthesis because they are part of the conflicting forces in us, which must be harmonised and synthesised before we can have a life in harmony with ourselves and our surroundings.
One of the core illusions that Assagioli urge us to overcome is that we are one person, one psychological whole, something we can easily believe if we only take into consideration that we live in a physical body. However, a little introspection will soon reveal that there are multitudes of different voices within our heads competing for our attention – something we discover when we experience ambivalences or conflicting feelings and thoughts.
Assagioli suggests that subpersonalities are the various self-images we often develop unconsciously from childhood and up through our life, some are false self-images based on external influences, and others are more realistic. The most prominent subpersonalities are based on our social roles in the family, as a child, brother, sister, father, mother, and the roles we have in relation to our work and social life.
The difficulty with subpersonalities is that they tend to control our lives because we identify with them, often in a very unconscious way, so we become a slave of their impulses and needs, instead of being the conscious “I” who can freely choose to play our roles, without being too caught up in their inner dynamics.
This e-book will give you insights into your subpersonalities and how to own them and transform them according to the philosophy and techniques of Psychosynthesis.
"This is a wonderful and important document! Kenneth has assembled a series of talks and writings by Roberto Assagioli that span his entire lifetime, from 1911 to the early 1970s, and which show how the concept of subpersonalities was an integral part of his thinking, and his practice, since before the formal elucidation of “psychosynthesis.” Kenneth has done a great job, not only of presenting Assagioli’s work but also of writing his own summation of the range of theory and practice encompassed in the term “subpersonalities.” Highly recommended for all students of psychosynthesis."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Roberto Assagioli (27 February 1888 – 23 August 1974) was an Italian psychiatrist and pioneer in the fields of humanistic and transpersonal psychology and the founder of the psychology movement known as Psychosynthesis.
Assagioli was an enthusiastic supporter of Psychoanalysis, but already in 1910 he criticized some of Freud’s theories in his doctoral thesis on Psychoanalysis, which he also called Psychosynthesis.
In an interview with Sam Keen from Psychology Today (1974), he presents the following view:
Keen: What are the major differences between psychosynthesis and psychoanalysis?
Assagioli: We pay far more attention to the higher unconscious and to the development of the transpersonal self. In one of his letters Freud said, “I am interested only in the basement of the human being.” Psychosynthesis is interested in the whole building. We try to build an elevator which will allow a person access to every level of his personality. After all, a building with only a basement is very limited. We want to open up the terrace where you can sun-bathe or look at the stars. Our concern is the synthesis of all areas of the personality. That means psychosynthesis is holistic, global and inclusive. It is not against psychoanalysis or even behaviour modification but it insists that the needs for meaning, for higher values, for a spiritual life, are as real as biological or social needs.
He presented his ideas in various journals, and in 1934 he published an overview of Psychosynthesis. Assagioli was decades ahead of Humanistic and Transpersonal psychology, which first appeared in the 50s and 60s. Assagioli, then, was a contributor to three revolutions in psychology: the Psychoanalytic, the Humanistic and the Transpersonal.
He passes on a formidable heritage to those inspired by his work and was one of the first to use the term subpersonality.
